Helping Couples Move Through Conflict and Rebuild Connection
When you and your partner become caught in the same conflicts, distance or misunderstandings, it can be difficult to find your way back to one another. You may struggle to communicate without becoming defensive, feel increasingly disconnected or wonder why the same painful patterns keep repeating.
Couples therapy offers a supportive space to slow these patterns down and understand what is happening beneath them. Together, we can explore the emotions and needs shaping your interactions, strengthen communication and help you build a more secure and connected relationship.
Understanding Your Relationship Cycle
Couples often become caught in recurring patterns of conflict, distance or misunderstanding. One partner may pursue a conversation while the other withdraws, or both may become defensive when difficult feelings arise. Over time, these cycles can leave you feeling unheard, alone or unsure how to reconnect—even when you both care deeply about the relationship.
In therapy, we’ll slow the cycle down and explore what happens between you during moments of conflict or disconnection. By understanding the emotions, needs and protective responses beneath the pattern, you can begin communicating more openly and responding to one another with greater care.
How Couples Therapy Can Help
Couples therapy is not about assigning blame or deciding who is right. It is about understanding the patterns affecting your relationship and helping both partners feel heard, respected and emotionally connected. Sessions are collaborative, trauma-informed and focused on approaching challenges as a team.
Together, we can work on:
Recognizing and changing recurring patterns of conflict
Communicating feelings and needs more openly
Understanding each partner’s attachment needs and protective responses
Navigating disagreements without escalating or withdrawing
Rebuilding trust and emotional safety
Strengthening affection, intimacy and connection
Adjusting to life transitions or changes in the relationship
Through this process, couples therapy can help you move away from feeling like opponents and toward a more secure, responsive and collaborative partnership.
What to Expect in Couples Therapy
Therapy begins with understanding what is bringing you in, the patterns affecting your relationship and what each of you hopes might change. We’ll regularly check in about your goals and adjust our work as your needs evolve.
Focused on the Cycle
We’ll slow down recurring interactions and explore the emotions, attachment needs and protective responses beneath conflict or distance.
Collaborative and Balanced
Both partners’ experiences matter. I work to understand the relationship rather than take sides or determine who is right.
Integrative and Practical
My approach is informed by Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, attachment theory, ACT, mindfulness and somatic awareness. Sessions may include deeper emotional exploration alongside practical ways to communicate and connect differently.
Trauma-Informed and Inclusive
Sessions are paced with care and sensitivity to each partner’s history, identity, culture and lived experience. Both partners’ safety and voluntary participation are essential.
Getting Started with Couples Therapy
The first step is a free 15-minute consultation. This gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss what is bringing you to couples therapy, answer your questions and consider whether working together feels like a good fit.
Couples sessions are held virtually and are available to partners located in Ontario. Sessions are 50 minutes and the fee is $225. Each partner completes a separate intake and consent form before therapy begins. Individual assessment conversations may also be recommended as part of the initial process.
Receipts are provided for insurance reimbursement where plans cover services from a Registered Psychotherapist or Canadian Certified Counsellor. Because coverage for couples therapy varies, each partner should confirm the details of their plan directly with their insurance provider.
FAQs About Couples Therapy
-
Couples therapy can support partners experiencing recurring conflict, communication difficulties, emotional distance, trust concerns, changes in intimacy or challenges related to major life transitions. You do not need to be in crisis to begin; some couples seek therapy to better understand their relationship and strengthen their connection.
-
Before beginning, each partner completes a separate intake and consent form. Our first session is typically held together and focuses on what is bringing you to therapy, the patterns affecting your relationship and what each of you hopes might change. Individual assessment conversations may also be recommended as we develop a shared understanding of your needs and goals.
-
Most sessions are attended together because the relationship is the focus of therapy. At times, I may recommend meeting briefly with each partner individually as part of the assessment process. These meetings remain part of couples therapy rather than becoming separate individual therapy, and we will discuss how privacy and information are handled beforehand.
